Does drinking alcohol make you forget your problems?  Maybe you find respite in alcohol that you can find nowhere else.  For whatever reason, though, you have made the decision to stop drinking alcohol.  And you don’t want to join AA or go to rehab.

Is it possible to stop drinking through your own sheer willpower?

Yes, it is.  Learning to break the cycle of drinking takes time, but it can be done without help from anyone else.  That said, it does help to inform those around you that you are attempting to overcome a drinking problem, so they can give you support.

If you want to stop drinking alcohol as much, create a 30 day plan to stop drinking.  Tell yourself you will let yourself go back to drinking as much as you want when the one month marker is over.

It may seem counterintuitive, but tricking yourself like this is sometimes a good way to overcome cravings for alcohol.  By going for a whole month with no alcohol in your system, you will probably find that you have no desire at all to go back to drinking it.

If you succumb to a drink over this period, don’t kill yourself.  Learning to forgive yourself is an important part of defeating an alcohol obsession.

By making small changes to your life and enacting a 30 day plan to stop drinking, you may well find that you do not need any outside help to overcome your alcohol problem.  AA meetings might work for some, but no one likes the thought of having to go to a rehab center.

Even though you are working to overcome the struggles of alcohol by yourself, do not be afraid to ask for help from friends and family.  You need a support network, no matter what – and you need your friends, especially if they are social drinkers, to understand that you don’t want temptation.
